Holiday Flower Show
Through Sunday, Jan. 13,
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursdays
This is the last chance to see a snowy winter wonderland inside a warm
tropical greenhouse. "Let It Snow, Let It Grow" mimics a snowy
landscape, featuring more than 75 varieties of white-leaved and
white-flowered plants, including white poinsettias.
Inspired by Nature Opening Reception at Catch 35
Monday, Jan. 14,
5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The opening reception for "Inspired by Nature," a photo exhibit inspired
by the new book by Julia Bachrach and Jo Ann Nathan of the Chicago Park
District will be held at Catch 35, 35 W. Wacker Drive. Suggested
donation, which includes light refreshments, is $20. Bachrach will be
available to sign books. The exhibit tells how nature, horticulture and
urban design shaped the Garfield Park Conservatory, one of the nation's
most stunning and intriguing botanical havens. The photo exhibit
continues at Catch 35 through mid-February.
Get the Buzz on Beekeeping Class CLASS IS FULL
Saturday, Jan. 19,
10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
A great class for beginning beekeepers. Michael Thompson, local renowned
beekeeper from Chicago Honey Co-op, will share his expertise on safely
working with bees, installing and maintaining hives and extracting
honey. Cost (which includes lunch) is $50; $45 for GPCA

New Volunteer Orientation

Building Urban Gardens Series
Saturdays beginning Jan. 26, 9:30 a.m.
to 12:30 p.m.
"BUGs" is an eight-week, hands-on gardening course for backyard and
community gardeners in the city, offered by Openlands at the Garfield
Park Conservatory. Designed for beginners, the course also serves as a
refresher for experienced gardeners. In the first class, learn about
planning and designing an ecological and organic garden. Cost for the
series is $100 or $80 for Openlands' members. For more information or to

Family Make-and-Take Activity: Centennial Celebrations
Saturdays and

Visit the Elizabeth Morse Genius Children's Garden to make and take home
an activity celebrating plants of the past, present and future. Themes
in January include: Mixed-Up Conservatory Charms on Jan. 5 and 6;
Prehistoric Plants: Fossil Fun on Jan. 12 and 13; "Scent"-ennial
Celebration: Herb-Scented Soap on Jan. 19 and 20; and Adopt a "Pet"
Conservatory Room: Grow a Miniature Desert House on Jan. 26 and 27.
Family Exploration Station: Past, Present and Future of Plants
Saturdays and Sundays through June 1, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Stop by the dig-pit and sensory cart in the Elizabeth Morse Genius
Children's Garden for hands-on, multi-sensory activities that peak
curiosity about horticulture and the history of plants. Read a plant's
future by taking the seed id quiz, explore a plant's past by digging for
plant fossils in the soil table, and get a close-up of the green and
growing present by viewing specially colored leaves on the light table.
Themes vary throughout the year, but all are tied to the centennial
celebration.
Mobile Exploration Station: Conservatory Birthday Booth
Thursdays, 5
p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Help blow out birthday candles for the Conservatory at this
historically-themed discovery cart. Decorate a special conservatory cake
in preparation for the 100th birthday, check out special "scentennial"
plant specimens and get to know famous people, plants and places by
viewing a portable suitcase of Conservatory memories.
Hunting for History Scavenger Hunt
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, until 8
p.m. on Thursdays
Pick up a scavenger hunt sheet at the front desk and travel back in
time. During the self-guided hunt, use educational hints and photo
details to discover exciting historical secrets, meet centennial
celebrities (both plant and mineral) and have an old-fashioned good
time.

Saturdays and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners answer gardening
questions in the Conservatory's front lobby. Or call the hotline at

Morning Glories for Families
Mondays, 10 a.m. to noon
Preschoolers and caregivers are invited to the Elizabeth Morse
Genius Children's Garden for a weekly drop-in activity and story
time. Each project takes 15-20 minutes.

Thursdays, 10 a.m. to noon
Larger groups or classes of preschoolers are invited to the
Elizabeth Morse Genius Children's Garden to enjoy a project
